What Is Birdshot?

Birdshot, or more commonly called "Target Load" has a variety of uses, but the most obvious of them: Birds.

Without getting into the complex aspects of shot (ie. Smaller numbers being larger shot), we will jump right into the main two things that shotgunners (both hunters and tactical users), want to know about their shotshells: What is it, and what does it do?

The Purpose:
The point of birdshot is to cover a large area with a barrage of pellets. You will have either larger pellets (Turkey, pheasant, etc.) or smaller pellets for small game (Quail, dove, and even rabbits and squirrels).

The Effect:
This is the effect of birdshot (Remington 12 Gauge 7 1/2 shot) at 10 yards. The chances of you effectively hitting waterfowl or upland game with that kind of spread is significantly high.

Multiple things can factor into the spread as well, such as:

1.) Barrel length

2.) Chokes (Tighter or wider shot patterns)

But essentially, this is what "Birdshot" looks like, and what it does.
